Primary Teacher

Responsible To: Director

The Primary Teacher’s overall role will be to train, guide and assist the Ugandan Primary Teachers. They will be responsible for overseeing two primary classrooms. Directly teaching the children will be part of the training process, but is not the main responsibility.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Guide and Direct Other Primary Teachers:
    • Establish and communicate clear objectives
    • Provide continuous feedback to teachers for development
    • Prepare monthly in-service training sessions for teaching staff
    • Model positive reinforcement behavior with the children
    • Assist teachers in preparing daily activities and lesson plans
    • Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use
    • Organize and model activities designed to promote physical, mental and social development (ex: games, arts and crafts, music, storytelling)
    • Work with other teachers to develop age appropriate learning objectives and monitor progress
    • Maintain a portfolio of assessments for each child including examples of a child’s work
    • Arrange home visits and parent conferences to discuss child progress
    • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussion, and demonstrations
    • Shadow classrooms
  • Work with Children:
    • Provide consistent encouragement to students
    • Substitute in classrooms as needed
    • Make learning active and fun!
    • Responsible for providing a “special” activity each day (ex: art, PE, music)
  • Working with Other Staff
    • Give regular feedback for improvement of your classrooms and the entire school
    • Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of school programs
  • Other
    • Promote maintenance of a tidy and orderly classroom
    • Ensure classroom furniture, materials, and supplies are properly maintained and stored
